ISLAMIC MEDICAL RESPONSE TO THE GOVERNMENT’s CONSULTATION ON RELIGIOUS ANIMAL SLAUGHTER
“Then, by using a very, very sharp knife (which should be kept like a surgeon’s knife in sharpness and cleanliness, as previously stated by DR Ghulam Khan (UFAW, 1971), a Deep swift cut done instantaneously and quickly to the blood vessels of the neck (the two caroid arteries which carry blood to the brain and head, the two jugular veins which bring blood from the brain back to the heart), the trachea (windpipe) and the oesophagus (gullet), but the central nervous system (the spinal cord) should be kept safe and intact (not cut).
This deep, large cut through all the blood vessels of the neck causes acute blood loss and haemorrhagic shock: we know the blood is under great pressure , especially in the big carotid arteries (systolic pressure ) and at high speed and, according to physical law, the pressure always goes from the high to low resistance – the point of the cut is the scene of low resistance for blood to and from the brain. As we have a fully intact, alive heart, so most of the blood is going to be pumped and poured out instantaneously and quickly under pressure leading to a rapid fall in the blood pressure. Thus depriving the brain of its main source of oxygen and glucose, and with no blood which is necessary to keep the animal alive and functioning and able to deal with any perceptive sensation this leads to anoxia and almost immediate loss of consciousness (anesthetization or “stunning” ). The cerebrospinal fluid pressure falls even more rapidly than the blood pressure because of the jugular veins being cut, and this results in a deep shock and more loss of consciousness.
The animal, at this stage after the cut, is in a stable and quiet state with no movement or any distressed behavior. One would assume, if there was any pain or suffering, it would kick, move or show signs. After this short resting phase, and because the brain is deprived of oxygen and blood due to the huge amount of bleeding, the heartbeats increase in order to increase the flow of blood to the brain and other deprived areas. Tonic and clonic involuntary contractions and convulsions start and occur as automatic physiological reflexes in order to send and push blood up, especially to the brain. These contractions and convulsions are ‘painless’ (not, as the layman would imagine, that the kicking is due to the pain) especially when the animal is already unconscious and still has an intact spinal cord with safe nerve centers to the limbs, muscles and organs. So, we have a huge amount of bleeding from the initial cut then blood loss is continuing with the squeezing pressure of these contractions and convulsions, leading to maximum bleeding-out and less retention of blood in the carcass, giving a better quality of meat [both safer and healthier (this is like direct method of slaughter, “but without stunning”)].
I would like to end this section of my talk with at least one testimony from, for example, Lord Horder GCVO, MD, FRCP, who explained this type of slaughtering scientifically (and without the use of stunning):
‘The animal loses consciousness immediately. It is difficult to conceive a more painless and rapid mode of death; for a few seconds after the cut is made, the animal makes no movement its body is then convulsed, the convulsive movements continue for about a minute and then cease. The interpretation of this fact is clear: the cut is made by a knife so sharp and so skillfully handled that a state of syncope with its associated unconsciousness follows instantaneously upon the severing of the blood pressure. The movement of the animal which begins at about 90 seconds are epileptiform in nature and are due to the blood-less state of the brain (cerebral ischemia with complete anoxaemia). Sensation has been abolished at the moment of the initial syncope.’
Of course, there have been many other statements by eminent scientists giving the same explanations and conclusions about the direct act of slaughtering such as DR Leonard Hill (1923), Sir Lovatt Evans, Professor Harold Burrow, I M Levingen (1979), Professor F R Bell. Mr. Openshaw, Mr. Hayhurst etc. (Some are quoted, in Impact Magazine 1985).
Let me quote Prof. Leonard Hill, F.R.C.V.S, who strongly believed and expressed his views in his article – that the incision applied in the Ritual Slaughter causes no pain. Any Surgeon today knows that sudden big injuries are not felt at the time of infliction. Pain comes later when the wound is (septic, and) inflamed. Structures beneath the skin apart from isolated sensory nerve endings are insensitive to the knife.
Apart from the clear Divine laws and orders to us, and the clear physiological and scientific evidence, I would like to mention one golden rule in Islam which, again, fits into the perfection of mercy to every individual animal.
The rule states “Any action or method which will definitely lead to some harm damage or suffering is to be rejected or, any action which can be suspected to lead to a prohibited act is also to be rejected (e.g. eating dead animals or consuming blood etc.). So any method of slaughtering which can give us more blood or a dead animal [before the cut (for slaughtering) is made] is rejected”
Two facts are indisputably established by the above Professor:
a) That a big injury such as throat cutting is not felt at the moment of infliction.b) That the cutting of big arteries in the throat instantly arrests the circulation in the brain and abolishes consciousness.
Prof. Charles Lovett Evans, F.R.C.V.S., has this to say:-
” As anyone who has ever witnessed the act is well aware, the animal lies absolutely still the moment the vessels arc cut, and it is only a minute or so later that asphyxia! convulsions set in. Consciousness we know is lost long before this ” .
” On physiological principles, it is clear that when such large vessels are severed the arterial blood pressure falls at once to a very low level, moreover the carotid arteries being severed, much of the blood supply to the brain is immediately lost and the result is immediate loss of consciousness. To consider that the animal suffers pain is, in my opinion, quite absurd. I consider the method to be equal to any “.
Prof. Leonard Hill says that no death could be more merciful, taking into account that the animal unlike man, has no knowledge or fear of impending death.

Reasons why Jews oppose mechanical, electrical or other methods of stunning:
In addition to being an unwarranted interference, the effect of an imposed post-cut stun could prevent the animal from making the involuntary post-mortem reflexes which facilitate exsanguination from the carcase, thereby causing the halachic (Jewish Religious Law) problem of blood being absorbed back into the meat. This would be contrary to religious requirements, since the blood is forbidden to be eaten by Jews.
The sudden impact of stunning can cause the following injuries in an animal: lacerations of the capillaries in the lungs; pathological changes in the central nervous system; a common result is also vertebral fracture.
Stunning of poultry is also forbidden by Jews for the above reasons. Research by Animal Aid has shown that the electrical stunning of poultry causes much suffering, it is impossible to give the correct voltage to each bird on the line resulting in some chickens receiving too little electrical current to render them unconscious, a most painful experience, and other chickens who receive a lethal shock will be dead before slaughter.
From a hygiene perspective stunning before slaughter does not allow full bleed-out and blood is retained in the carcase. Since blood putrefies very rapidly harmful bacteria accumulate in the meat fibres which greatly reduces its meat-keeping qualities.
Meat slaughtered by shechita is painless to the animal and healthier for humans,

THE AUTHENTIC HALAL PROPHETIC DHABH/ZABIHA(animal slaughter) FOR TRUE HALAL MEAT ACCORDING TO THE QUR’AN AND SUNNAH
INTRODUCTION
Islam, the final religion to mankind, is a comprehensive full way of life.The holy book Al-Qur’an and the Sunnah(Ahadith/Actions) of the final prophet Muhammad (peace he upon him) are the two major holy references for every Muslim for all affairs and all issues of life.
The method of DHABH(animal slaughter) practiced by the Final Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) was quite clear and shown to the companions (Sahabas) and is well recorded at that time, especially when the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) did the Dhabh by his own gentle caring hands to the animal in front of all. .
It is the same method which was practiced and adopted by the previous Prophets: Abraham, Moses and Jesus(peace be upon them), the same as done by Prophet Muhammad(PBUH).
It is the same method adopted by all schools of thoughts(the 4 MAZAHIBS…).
The act of Dhabh is sacred and permanent, however the new technology and the new sciences can be used to facilitate more this holy act of animal slaughter or to give better welfare to the animals.
Not only that but the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) has warned us before in a clear Hadith that he will FIGHT all those who do not do DHABH(animal slaughter) like him.
THE HADITH:
Narrated by Anas bin Malik(RDA):ALLAH’s Messenger(peace be upon him) said:
“I HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO FIGHT THE PEOPLE TILL ………… SLAUGHTER AS WE SLAUGHTER,…..”
(Bukhari,vol 1,book 8,the Book of As-salat,hadith number 392)
Surely, the use of stunning today or the machine for animal slaughter is different than the HUMANE method practiced by the merciful Prophet Muhammad(pbuh).
All these torture techniques(stunning) were invented by the non Muslims in the west, not for humane reasons as they claim?
According to many medical researches stunning has been found to cause:
-Pain and cruelty to the animal(Islam prohibits that)
-Death of some animals,by stopping the heart , especially poultry before doing the cut(Mitah and is haram to eat in the Qur’an)
-Less bleeding out by weakening the heart beats and by causing internal haemorrhage inside the small blood vessel which are inside the meat and can not be seen called in the west: “SALT AND PEPPER HAEMORRHAGE”.
Blood here is consumed by the Muslim and blood is haram to consume as mentioned in the Qur’an and blood is a big health hazards medically?
-Risk to BSE/Mad cow disease in the cow/beef
-Disrupting and changing the natural healthy chemical ingredients of the meat which make it not Tayyib or natural and harmful to health.
Many Muslims do not know that to do DHABH(animal slaughter) without the use of any stunning is LEGAL in this country for both: Muslims and Jews.
The Jewish community do follow the law of the land and avoid the use of stunning completely, but our Muslim companies and most Halal shops do follow the non Muslims in their animal slaughter and use different types of stunning?
THEY ARE BETRAYING:ISLAM,PROPHET MUHAMMAD(pbuh) , THE MUSLIM CONSUMERS AND THE LAW OF THE LAND …BY PUTTING THE LABEL ?HALAL? ON THEIR MEAT AND POULTRY WHICH CAME FROM STUNNED ANIMALS???

THE ANIMAL :
The animal should be permissible/halal and legal to eat by meeting the strict criteria set by Islam which will clearly includes:
* The animal be healthy
THE INTENTION (Niyyah)
Is to obey ALLAH, practice Prophet Muhammad’s method of Dhabh and eat Halal Tayyib meat in order to feed ourselves,get healthy, stay alive and in order to feed the poor and needy people.
Before we do Dhabh, we are asking the permission of ALLAH to do this act of animal slaughter or killing . Halal Dhabh and Halal meat is one way to worship ALLAH and is a spiritual and a rewarding act . One should THANK ALLAH for allowing us to have this highly nutritious food.
THE AUTHENTIC RECORDED PROPHETIC METHOD OF DHABH:
-By holding the animal in a comfortable calm position, without causing any stress or excitement
-It is advisable for the animal to face QIBLAH(Makkah)
-By cutting the throat in the neck : by one swift/cut and by using a very sharp, very clean and long knife -While mentioning TASMIAH(bismillah, ALLAH Akbar)/in the Name of ALLAH, ALLAH is greater). -Making sure to cut: The major blood vessels(Carotids and Jugulars),the Oesophagus, the Trachea but without cutting the Spinal cord –Without the use of any stunning technique(Torture techniques),before or after the cut -Then the animal to be left to die peacefully(physiological death), naturally and without any interference or handling till he/she becomes completely MOTIONLESS.
UNFORTUNATELY MOST ?HALAL? MUSLIM COMPANIES/ABATTOIRS/HALAL SHOPS/RESTAURANTS ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE LEGAL PROPHET MUHAMMAD(pbuh) IN HIS HUMANE SAFE HEALTHY BLESSED METHOD OF DHABH(animal slaughter)
PARTLY DUE TO IGNORANCE BUT MOSTLY DUE TO GREED AND FINANCIAL REASONS???
THE OTHER SERIOUS AND NEGLECTED ISLAMIC ISSUE IS THE ABSCENCE OF TAYYIB(natural/wholesome organic,healthy) ANIMAL AND MEAT AND POULTRY IN ALMOST ALL MEAT/POULTRY ON THE MARKET IN HALAL SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS???
