• Muslim Council launches new halal food lobby

• Will defend halal slaughter methods

All halal foods (those permitted under Islamic dietary guidelines) will now be regulated by a new overarching body, the UK Halal Commission.

Launched on Saturday, 2nd June 2012 at a special gathering of imams, scholars and health and food industry associations, the UK Halal Commission will act as the UK’s premier halal organisation, defending the halal industry from recent attacks and lobbying media and government.

False charges

At the Muslim Council (MCB)-sponsored event at Birmingham Central Mosque, the meeting signed a historic communiqué, the ‘Birmingham Declaration’.

The Declaration underlined concern at attempts by pressure groups to change the law, potentially removing the exemption which allows religious communities such as Jews and Muslims to slaughter animals without stunning. The Declaration affirmed the Muslim community’s resolve to resist these attempts and to campaign against them.

The document went on to declare that criticism of religious slaughter – that it causes more pain – is false. It said that no other method of slaughter was more humane than halal, provided proper standards were maintained.

In addition to vigorously campaigning against any change to the current definition of religious slaughter, the new Commission will develop an ‘assurance scheme’ to ensure strict adherence to animal welfare and other halal standards. It will also address wider issues relating to training, education, food ingredients, and pharmaceuticals.

Lobbying

The meeting was addressed by Farooq Murad, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, Dr Mohammed Naseem, Chairman Birmingham Central Mosque, Dr Ahmad Makhdoom, Director World Muslim League, Dr A Majid Katme,Spokesman Islamic Medical Association, Haji Akram, Association of Non-stun Abattoirs, Mawlana Yunus Dudhwala, Halal Monitoring Committee, Rafiq Sehgal, Bradford Council for Mosques, Mawlana Israr Hussain Kazmi, Hussainia Mosque, Birmingham and representatives of other organisations.

Speakers at the Commission launch discussed creating an extensive awareness campaign, starting with the Muslim community itself: the Friday mosque sermon (Khutba) will be used to encourage demand by Muslim consumers for ‘un-stunned’ chicken and meat.

MCB’s deputy secretary general Dr Shuja Shafi said, “Consumers of halal food need to be confident that their food is prepared to high standards of safety, animal welfare and environmental protection. Schemes such as Red Tractor Assurance, intended to maintain, develop and promote standards throughout the whole food industry do not permit ‘halal’ food operators to participate in the scheme on grounds that the meat is slaughtered by the (permissible and legal) religious method. This is despite the assertion in their promotional material ‘whatever your business, find out what Red Tractor can do for you’. The UK Halal Commission will work to develop a credible Assurance Scheme for halal food and in other sectors.”

The UK Halal Commission will now invite representatives from all segments of the British Muslim community to put forward representations to the body. Convenor of the Birmingham meeting, the MCB’s deputy secretary general Dr. Shuja Shafi, will act as interim chairman to help put in place a proper governance structure.”

IN RAMADAN

(Surah 2(Al baqarah),verse 168)

*Islam is a whole way of life and we have all Islamic details on foods:Halal meat and Halal foods,Haram foods and drinks,how to eat and when to eat etc……?

*For genuine Halal meat/poultry: Our teacher and model,Sayyidna Muhammad(peace be upon him) has told us and has shown us :how to do Dhabh/Zabh(animal slaughter) and he warned us in a Hadith in case one deviate from his humane Prophetic method,as in the use today of many stunning/torture techniques(electric shock for sheeps,electric water bath for poultry and Captive bolt pistol for cows) which are adopted widely by the non Muslims in the UK/Europe and unfortunately by most Muslim/non Muslim companies who supply most so called Halal meat/poultry to most Halal shops and Muslim restaurants?

Although the law in Britain allows Muslims(& Jews) to slaughter their animals according to their religion/Prophetic method and without the use of any stunning technique.?

New Medical scientific knowledge onthe effects of stunning on the animal have shown many HARAM OUTCOMES, apart from inflicting pain and cruelty on the animal:

Some animals die from stunning like the poultry(33%)….this is MITAH and is Haram to eat even when the throat was cut after.

There is less bleeding out after stunning and some blood stays inside the meat itself.

Blood is harmful to health and Haram to consume.

Stunning the cow has been found to spread Mad cow disease(BSE) too….

The Official Muslim view in the UK:
Halal meat/poultry is only in the Prophetic method of Dhabh and without the use of any stunning before Dhabh or mechanical slaughter.
ALL MUSLIM BELIEVERS SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE MEAT/ CHICKEN THEY ARE EATING ARE NOT COMING FROM STUNNED ANIMALS, AND THAT THEY ARE GENUINE HALAL MEAT SLAUGHTERED ACCORDING TO THE PROPHETIC METHOD OF DHABH(direct method with Tasmiah on each animal),ESPECIALLY IN THIS HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN.
IT IS A DUTY ON EVERY ONE OF US to make sure of Halal!

Unfortunately it was found in many reports/studies that in about 90% of the meat/poultry in halal shops and restaurants,the animals were stunned before:NOT GENUINE HALAL AND MANY MIGHT CONTAIN MUHARRAMAT!

Another order in the Qur’an is to eat also only: TAYYIB MEAT/FOODS AND DRINKS.
Unfortunately , most of the meat/poultry we eat today is not Tayyib?
The animal body, in most cases, is full of: antibiotics,hormones,harmful chemicals from vaccines, fed:GM diet , unnatural diet or animal protein?

Also most FOODS today is not Tayyib!
As it is not natural or wholesome , is full of chemicals and additives,processed and is considered as junk foods and is very unhealthy!

*For Halal foods and drinks:
We are aware today of many HARAM ingredients in many foods and drinks on the market (bread,biscuit,icecream etc…) like:
Gelatin or fat from pork,alcohol etc…

Besides,many foods items contain many HARAM ADDITIVES/E NUMBERS(Emulsifiers,colouring…) like:E 120,E 140,E 471,E 472…..
Every Muslim believer should CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK AND READ THE INGREDIENTS WRITTEN ON EVERY FOOD/DRINK ITEM
IN THE SUPERMARKET BEFORE BUYING IT!

Vegeterian food(without any animal protein), can be eaten but only after making sure that they contain no alcohol and does not contain any Haram harmful additives or GM ingredients..

Finally,let us all remember these worrying facts in case any one eat any haram meat or food or drink:
*Du’as will not be accepted
*Ibadat/Salat will not be accepted for 40 days
*The Muslim will not enter Jannah/Heaven .

We have to remember here the parent’s big responsibility in avoiding the feeding of their young developping children any Haram food item,especially, as their bodies and organs are developping from the foods they eat?

Islamic vs. Western slaughter

(Scientific results)

Al Shaddad Bin Aous has quoted this tradition of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "God calls for mercy in everything, so be merciful when you kill and when you slaughter, sharpen your blade to relieve its pain".

Many allegations have been made that Islamic slaughter is not humane to animals. However, Professor Schultz and his colleague Dr. Hazim of the Hanover University, Germany, proved through an experiment, using an Electro encephalograph (EEG) and Electro Cardiogram (ECG) that *Islamic slaughter is THE humane method of slaughter* and captive bolt stunning, practiced by the Western method, causes severe pain to the animal. The results surprised many.

Experimental Details:

1. Several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all animals, touching the surface of the brain.

2. The animals were allowed to recover for several weeks.

3. Some animals were slaughtered by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular Veins and carotid Arteries of both sides; as also the trachea and esophagus-Halal Method.

4. Some animals were stunned using a captive bolt pistol – humane slaughter by the western method.

5. During the experiment, EEG and ECG were recorded on all animals to record the condition of the brain and heart during the course of slaughter and stunning Results and Discussion:

I. Islamic method

1. The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph before slaughter, thus indicating that the animal did not feel any pain during or immediately after the incision.

2. For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded a condition of deep sleep – unconsciousness. This is due to a large quantity of blood gushing out from the body.

3. After the above mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level, showing no feeling of pain at all.

4. As the brain message ( EEG ) dropped to zero level, the heart was still pounding and the body convulsing vigorously (a reflex action of the spinal cord) driving maximum blood from the body: resulting in hygienic meat for the consumer.

II Western method by C.B.P. Stunning

1. The animals were apparently unconscious soon after stunning.
2. EEG showed severe pain immediately after stunning.
3. The hearts of the animal stunned by C.B.P. stopped beating earlier as compared to those of the animals slaughtered according to the Halal method resulting in the retention of more blood in the meat. This in turn is unhygienic for the consumer.

Cattle stun gun may heighten "madcow’" risk

WASHINGTON (Reuter) – A stun gun used on cattle before slaughter can send brain tissue scattering throughout the animal, which could provide a route for madcow disease to spread to humans, a consumer group said Thursday.

There have been no documented cases of madcow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), in the United States, but the consumers group said the use of stun guns posed a potentially deadly risk in Europe.

“These new discoveries mean that some of the steaks and hamburgers Amercans eat today may contain small bits of brain matter,” said David Schardt, nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

“Now, since BSE has not been detected here, there is no known risk at this time. But where BSE does exist in cattle, such meat with specks of brain tissue in it could be a deadly meal,” he said.

In an unusual news conference, the Washington-based consumer watchdog group was joined by meat industry representatives who said they planned to sponsor a study on stunning methods later in the year.

“If a problem is found either with stunning in general or with particular methods or machinery, we will move swiftly to address it,” said Janet Collins, a vice president at the American Meat Institute, an industry trade group.

Brain tissue and spinal cord are the most infectious part of an animal with BSE, which eats deadly holes in an infected animal’s brain. A world panic over beef was triggered after an outbreak of the disease among British herds in the late 1980s.

Scientists remain unsure whether madcow disease can be transmitted to humans, but say they are concerned about an inexplicable rise in the number of cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, an incurable brain disease in humans.

BSE has never been detected in U.S. cattle herds and federal health officials have erected a series of “firewalls” against it, including banning feeding ruminant by-products — parts of other farm animals — to cattle, a practice believed to have spread BSE in Britain.

Before cattle are slaughtered, they are stunned with a shot to the head to make them unconscious and to protect workers. Stunning is required by law so the animal feels no pain when it dies.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest said recent research at Texas A&M University and by Canada’s Food Inspection Agency found a method called pneumatic stunning delivered a force so explosive that it splattered brain tissue throughout a cow’s system.

“Our research shows that it’s possible that microscopic particles of brain matter can be circulated to the lungs, liver and maybe other sites,” Tam Garland, a research veterinarian at Texas A&M said in CSPI’s July newsletter. “The implications are frightening.”

Some 30 to 40 percent of American cattle are stunned by pneumatic guns, which fire a metal bolt into a cow’s brain followed by a pulverizing burst of 150 pounds of air pressure.

The method is popular at larger U.S. meat plants because it renders cattle insensible longer than other techniques, erasing concerns the animals might revive before they are killed and cause havoc in a long processing line. Pneumatic guns are not used widely abroad.

Meat industry officials said they started considering a study on stunning methods several months ago after learning of the research. They said they planned to tap U.S. and Canadian government officials for advice on how to conduct the study and hoped to have results by the end of the year.

“No one wants the U.S. to remain BSE free more than the nation’s one million beef producers,” said Gary Weber of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
